This stone was first found in Greenland in 1811 and was named after sodalite because of its high sodium content. Sodalite can be produced synthetically. However, these syntheses are rarely identical in composition to the actual mineral. According to other sources, it has been known since ancient times and was regarded as a protective stone there.
