Hematite has its name from the Greek "haemateios" (in German: bloody), and is probably due to the fact that its grinding water turns blood red. His German synonym "Blutstein" is wrongly translated from the English name "Bloodstone" and placed on an equal footing. But "Bloodstone" is a synonym for Heliotrop. The use of hematite as a red dye for cave paintings has been documented since the Palaeolithic Age. According to ancient tradition, it has always been used as a healing stone for haemostasis, hematopoiesis and wound healing. In ancient times it was called specularite (mirror stone), which indicates its use as a mirror. Already with the Egyptians haematite was very much desired as a gemstone and was used for the production of artistic objects. In its polished state, hematite shows its typical metallic shine particularly well. However, it is very brittle and its sensitivity to heat, acids and salts can easily oxidize it on the skin. Haematite also plays a very important role as iron ore.

Healing effect: Hematite gives courage and vitality as well as joy of life. Through more spontaneity, independence, relaxation and determination not only your own needs receive more attention, but also goals can be pursued much better. Hematite thus contributes to improving the quality of life. It also helps to avert bad luck or negative influences and to open up reserves of strength. Hematite can also help to uncover psychologically caused organ disorders.
