The martingale is clipped in such a way that the fork is slightly sagging. The collar should be so loose that it does not hinder the horse from breathing. It prevents the horse from getting caught in the forks with the front hooves.

It has to be buckled so that the two leather straps sag when the reins are normal. So it only works if the horse really takes the head too high.

The martingale is used mainly for jumping and off-road riding in horses, which push the head strongly up, hit with the head or reject.

The martingale should not be used in horses suffering from headshaking syndrome. On these horses the martingale would constantly and excessively affect what they do not understand, because the twitching movements with the head are involuntary.
